Sustainability
At the heart of everything we do, we stand by one of our most important values: sustainability.
As a cafe, it's our responsibility to tackle climate change with the mindset of a reusable, not a disposable, culture. By encouraging a sustainable program within the cafe, we actively identify inefficiencies, reduce operational costs, and minimise waste.
We're proud to serve many of our hot drinks in HuskeeCups, innovative cups made from waste coffee husks and copolymers. Our HuskeeSwap initiative takes this a step further, offering a unique, opt-in cup exchange system. It's a "BYO with Benefits" program: simply hand over your HuskeeCup when you order, and receive your drink in a freshly cleaned one – no need to wash it yourself!
This convenient and hassle-free system allows you to refresh your daily routine while joining a community of conscious consumers. The journey comes full circle too, as end-of-life HuskeeCups are returned to Huskee and creatively repurposed into items like dog bowls or phone cases. HuskeeCups are available for purchase from our store.
We partner with Better Soils Australia to ensure our used coffee grounds are collected and transformed into nutrient-rich compost. This healthy soil not only supports robust plant growth but also significantly improves water retention, reduces erosion, and sequesters carbon, directly mitigating the impacts of climate change.
If you'd like to take home some of our used grounds for your own garden, simply bring a container and our baristas will be happy to help
Our collaboration with Common Ground Project highlights our broader commitment. Common Ground Project is a regenerative farm and social enterprise empowering communities through fair access to locally grown, healthy food. They provide an inclusive space for growing, cooking, and knowledge sharing, offering hands-on workshops, training, and employment pathways through their Food Knowledge programs. These initiatives directly support their vital Food Relief efforts in Victoria, believing that connection to land, food, and community can drive meaningful social change. As part of our commitment, 10% of all coffee purchased by Via Battisti is donated back to the farm, directly supporting their incredible work.
We also work with Circular Peninsula, the Mornington Peninsula's first decentralised circular economy hub for hard-to-recycle plastic. They partner with the community to recycle plastic, educate, measure data, and develop closed-loop solutions for a critical waste issue. They come each week to Via Battisti to collect all of our Tetra Pak and milk bottle lids.
Finally, while we always buy local when we can, if you're a green thumb with a surplus of backyard harvest, please bring it in, we'll exchange it for a coffee!
